Moruisg & Sgurr nan Ceannaichean and Little Wyvis - Sunday 7th December 2025
Moruisg & Sgurr nan Ceannaichean
Leaving Inverness in thick fog, it was a toss-up whether conditions would be better SW of Achnasheen. Nine enthusiastic met near Loch Sgamheim under a blanket of cloud, but no fog. Having crossed the river and ducked under the railway, and started ascending through the deer fenced enclosure alongside the helpful white posts, the cloud started to recede. The group made good time on the ascent to Moruisg, conscious of heavy rain forecast by 2pm, briefly pausing to appreciate the cloud inversions and identify distant peaks.
A cold southerly wind accompanied our passage along the rolling top ridge to the second peak of Sgurr nan Ceannaichean. This 913m Corbett was a Munro for a short time before a resurvey established its current status. Although the views had closed in this hill has more character than Moruisg, but the pair make for an enjoyable winter round. The group identified the correct NE ridge to descend, after a momentary navigational lapse near the peak, and made good time down to a burn that drains the northern corrie. The final stretch had hints of bogginess and hidden ditches, but thankfully did not engulf anyone’s boots on this occasion. The rain held off until after we’d reached the cars, making for a swift and enjoyable day out. Back in Inverness the fog still hadn’t lifted and we all felt like we’d made the right decision to get out onto the hills.

Little Wyvis
It was a foggy day when five of us met in the Vue car park and set off to climb the Corbett Little Wyvis. We met the others in the Silverbridge car park and made very good progress on the ascent up the main track. We saw a few tame deer on our way up and got some good views when the cloud cleared a bit.
It was cold and cloudy when we got to the summit so we didn't stay there for long but had a leisurely lunch in a sheltered spot on the way back down the main track. It clouded over a bit as we got lower down and didn't take us long to get back to the cars.
We were in good time so went to the Coul House Hotel afterwards for a cuppa with shortbread and tablet, which was great value at £5 per head! We sat around a big open fire, which was cosy and festive with Christmas decorations. It was a very pleasant way to end an enjoyable day.
